Terrain Generalization
Goals
Development of interactive methods for generalizing elevation models that allow the user to selectively remove superfluous details and enhance important terrain features according to the following criteria:- size of terrain details,
- geomorphological importance of terrain features,
- viewing distance.
Results
A method is currently under development based on an enhanced Laplace pyramid of the terrain. Crests and valleys are identified by a combination of various local filters (plan curvature, profile curvature, percentile, local elevation range). An interactive prototype application has been developed using Java with JOGL (Java Binding for the OpenGL API).
